Ground
Zero. It’s the hallowed battlefield in America’s latest war. It’s our generation’s
Bunker Hill . . . Gettysburg . . . Normandy. Later this week, workers will
end salvage efforts at the place where more than 2,800 people died in the
Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Someday, a memorial will rise
on the site. Already, emotions rise at the mention of it. On this Memorial
Day, it seems appropriate to allow some of those who volunteered or visited
Ground Zero — or lost someone there — to share their reflections.

The
tolling of a fire bell, the skirl of bagpipes and the somber tones of
"Taps"
accompanied an otherwise silent ceremony today marking the end of
recovery
efforts
at Ground Zero. A single flag-draped stretcher was carried away to
honor
the hundreds of victims who have never been recovered.
