OUR
SECRET
( all
pets )
We have
a secret, you and I,
that
no one else shall know.
For
who but I can see you lay
each
night in fire glow.
And
who but you can reach my hand
before
I go to bed,
and
feel the loving warmth of you
and
touch your silky head.
And
only I walk woodland paths
and
see ahead of me,
your
small form racing with the wind,
so young,
so free again.
And
only I can see you swim
in every
brook I pass,
and
when I call, no one but I
can
see the bending of the grass.

A
PUPPY'S PRAYER
Now
I lay me down to sleep,
The
king size bed is soft and deep..
I sleep
right in the center groove
My human
being can hardly move!
I've
trapped her legs, she's tucked in tight
And
here is where I pass the night
No
one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till
morning comes and "I want food!"
I sneak
up slowly to begin
My nibbles
on my human's chin.
She
wakes up quickly,
I have
sharp teeth-
I'm
a puppy, don't you see?
For
the morning's here
And
it's time to play
I always
seem to get my way.
So thank
you Lord for giving me
This
human person that I see.
The
one who hugs and holds me tight
And
shares her bed with me at night!

MEMBER
OF THE FAMILY
(all
furry animals)
What
would I do without you,
My precious
Furry Friend?
Part
mischief, but all blessing,
and
faithful to the end!
You
look at me with eyes of love,
You
never hold a grudge,
You
think I'm far too wonderful
To criticize
or judge.
It seems
your greatest joy in life
Is being
close to me,
I think
God knew how comforting
Your
warm, soft fur would be.
I know
you think you're human,
But
I'm glad it isn't true,
The
world would be a nicer place
If folks
were more like you.
A few
short years are all we have,
One
day we'll have to part,
But
you, my pet, will always have
A place
within my heart.

HE'S
JUST MY DOG
He is
my other eyes that see above the clouds,
my ears
that hear above the winds.
He is
the part of me
that
can reach out into the sea.
He has
told me that I am his reason for being.
By the
way, he rests against my leg.
By the
way, he thumps his tail at my smallest smile.
By the
way he shows his hurt
when
I leave without taking him.
I think
it makes him sick with worry
when
he is not with me.
When
I am angry, he clowns to make me smile.
When
I am happy, he is joy unbounded.
When
I am a fool, he ignores it.
When
I succeed, he even brags.
Without
him, I am only another man.
With
him, I am all powerful.
He has
taught me the meaning of devotion.
He is
loyalty itself.
With
him, I know a secret comfort and peace.
He has
promised to wait for me,
when
ever, where ever.
I will
always need him as much as he needs me.

is just my dog!" ~author

HEAVEN'S
DOGGY DOOR
My best
friend closed his eyes last night,
As
his head lay in my hand.
The
doctors said he was in pain,
And
it was hard for him to stand.
The
thoughts that scurried through my head,
As
I cradled him in my arms,
Were
of his younger puppy years,
And
Oh... his many charms.
Today
there was no gentle nudge,
With
an intense "I love you" gaze.
Only
a heart that's filled with tears,
Remembering
our joy filled days.
But
an
Angel just appeared to me,
And
said, "You should cry no more,
God
also loves our canine friends,
He's
installed a doggy door!" ~author unknown~

FAREWELL
(all
pets)
Farewell
my humans,
Yet,
not farewell.
Where
I go,
You
too shall dwell.
I am
gone
before
your face.
A moment's
time,
A better
place.
When
you come where
I have
recently stepped,
You
will wonder why,
You
have so wept.

Crossing-the-Rainbow-Bridge
By the
edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a
lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where
the friends of man and woman do run,
When
their time on earth is over and done.
For
here, between this world and the next,
Is a
place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this
golden land, they wait and they play,
'Til
the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more
do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For
here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their
limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their
bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They
romp through the grass, without a care,
Until
one day they stop, and sniff at the air.
All
ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then
all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For
just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together
again, both person and pet.

OUTSIDE
HEAVEN'S GATE
"I'll
Wait -
I explained
to St. Peter
I'd
rather stay here,
Outside
the Pearly Gate.
I won't
be a nuisance
I never
was, I won't even bark.
I'll
be very patient and wait.
I'll
be here -
Chewing
my celestial bone,
no matter
how long you may be.
I'd
miss you too much
if I
went in alone .
It wouldn't
be Heaven to me.

FAITHFUL
DOG
A faithful
dog will play with you,
laugh
with you.
She'll
gladly starve to stay with you,
and
never reason why?
And
when you're feeling out of sorts,
she
seems to understand.
She
looks at you with shining eyes,
and
tries to lick your hand.
That
blind implicit faith in you is matched by such great love-----
The
kind of love we all should have
for
our Master up above.
When
all is said and done, it's not so very odd. For when you spell "dog" backwards,
you
have the name of GOD

I
DID NOT DIE
(all
pets)
Do not
stand at my grave and weep,
I am
not there, I do not sleep,
I am
the thousand winds that blow,
I am
the diamond glints on snow,
I am
the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am
the gentle autumn's rain,
When
you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am
the swift uplifting rush,
Of quiet
birds in circled flight,
I am
the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not
stand at my grave and cry,
I am
not there, I did not die.

LEND
ME A FERRET
I will
lend to you for awhile, a ferret, God said.
For
you to love him while he lives
and
mourn for him when he's dead.
Maybe
for five or ten years, or maybe one or three.
But
will you, 'till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He'll
bring his charms to gladden you
and
(should his stay be brief)
you'll
always have his memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot
promise he will stay, since all from earth return.
But
there are lessons taught below
I want
this ferret to learn.
I've
looked the whole world over in search of teachers true.
And
from the folk that crowd's life's land I have chosen you.
Now,
will you give him all your love
Nor
think the labour vain,
Nor
hate me when I come to take my ferret back again?
I fancied
that I heard them say
"Dear
Lord Thy Will be Done,"
For
all the joys this ferret will bring,
the
risk of grief we'll run.
We'll
shelter him with tenderness
we'll
love him while we may
And
for the happiness we've known forever grateful stay.
But
should you call him back
much
sooner than we've planned,
We'll
brave the bitter grief that comes,
and
try to understand.
If,
by our love, we've managed, your wishes to achieve
In memory
of him we loved, to help us while we grieve,
When
our faithful bundle departs this world of strife,
We'll
have yet another ferret and love him all his life.

THE
CAT'S PRAYER
Now
I lay me down to sleep,
I pray
this cushy life to keep.
I pray
for toys that look like mice,
And
sofa cushions, soft and nice.
I pray
for gourmet kitty snacks,
And
someone nice to scratch my back,
For
windowsills all warm and bright,
For
shadows to explore at night.
I pray
I'll always stay real cool
And
keep the secret feline rule
To NEVER
tell a human that
The
world is really ruled by CATS!

CLOVER
HEAVEN
There
is a place called Clover Heaven;
Where
Life is renewed and pain removed;
Where
bodies are healed and whole again;
Where
life is now filled with glee as it must be;
A place
our babies must go;
This
place called Clover Heaven.
Where
the meadows are full of Life
with
peace and frolic and no strife nor fear of danger.
The
flowers in full bloom
always
changing colors ever so grand
and
a home for many others.
The
breeze so soft, free, and flowing;
So pure
and brisk and moves the grass ever so tall,
it is
a velvet carpet after all;
So soft
and smooth, so very snug;
tis
a good place to curl up and take a snooze
and
bask in the sun that is ever so warm.
This
place called Clover Heaven.
Where
the water is so pure and clean;
it looks
like a mirror that I can see
and
admire the renewed me.
The
clover seems to reach the sky so full and free
a good
place to romp and play hide and go seek.
.So
you see---------
The
sun so warm, The water so clean,
The
grass so smooth, The breeze so soft,
The
flowers in bloom,
A place
to romp and play To bask or bathe,
To snooze
and rest With food aplenty
And
water to drink With bodies whole
And
free of pain With life renewed
and
filled with glee; A place they must go
To await
their masters.
.So
dear Master
Dry
those Tears and smile again
For
I wait for you In this Place called
Clover
Heaven.

LAST
NIGHT IN THE TWILIGHT
Last
night in the twilight as I lay in my bed,
I heard
my dogs praying and this is what they said.
It seems
that these humans who love us so deep,
Cannot
cross emotion, it runs far too deep.
If this
is the last night I lay near this head,
Then
please let them know somehow what I've said.
Right
in their world is elusive and shy
The
deeper the cause, the harder they try.
The
first step is always in love and with care.
But
soon it is pride that carries them there.
I am
no victim, and they need no decree.
It's
pride and its foolishness that will destroy me.
The
human heart struggles at what it knows not.
And
gains of the spirit can never be bought.
I pray
in this twilight my human will see,
It's
far more than flesh that bonds him to me.
I fear
not the darkness, or unknown ahead.
It's
leaving him here, that I fear instead.
For
without me beside him, to look in these eyes,
There
will be no more twilight, nor fairness of skies.
Please
make his pen worthy to write of our trust,
Steady
his sword and forward its thrust.
For
gently this night passes us by,
And
we once inseparable will soon say Good Bye.

Lord Byron's
inscription
on the tomb of
his dog, 1808
Near
this spot are deposited the remains of one
who
possessed beauty without vanity,
strength
without insolence
courage
without ferocity
and
all the virtues of man without his vices.
This
praise, which would be unmeaning flattery
if inscribed
over human ashes
is but
a just tribute to the memory of
Boatswain,
a dog.
One of my favorites
We
Only Have Them For a Little While
We humans
are prone to chase rainbows,
always
wanting that pot of gold.
But
the wisest of us remember the joy
of just
a small creature to hold.
Allow
yourself to accept their great gift,
and
know what devotion is worth.
If you've
been loved by a dog,
you're
the richest person on earth.
But
their lives are lived in miniature
bright
sun to palest moon.
They
bless our days with innocence,
and
faithfulness that's stilled too soon.
These
precious lives are fragile,
as fleeting
as a baby's smile.
So give
them all the love you have.
They're
only ours for a little while.
And
in the lonely moments
when
you pause to wonder why,
hold
close those brightest shooting stars
that
burn so briefly in our sky.
But
then look deeper in your heart to know
all
love must intertwine,
and
when the night sky seems the darkest,
you'll
see their light forever shine.
