OUTSIDE
HEAVEN'S
GATE
"I'll
Wait -
I
explained
to St. Peter
I'd
rather stay here,
Outside
the Pearly Gate.
I
won't
be a nuisance
I
never
was, I won't even bark.
I'll
be very patient and wait.
I'll
be here -
Chewing
my celestial bone,
no
matter
how long you may be.
I'd
miss you too much
if
I
went in alone .
It
wouldn't
be Heaven to me.

MY PARTNER
My
dog
is more than my partner you see,
Because
he is a very good friend to me.
He's
the nose I don't have, the eyes I have not,
He's
one of the best partners most cops ain't got.
Day
by day we do what we do best,
His
four paws never seem to rest.
He
always
does whatever I ask,
Seeming
to enjoy every task.
I
know
one day his work will be done,
But
for now we can only have fun.
For
my dog is more than a partner to me,
My
dog
is my best friend and he always will be.

WILL THERE BE
DOGS
IN HEAVEN?
"Will
there be dogs in heaven?"
I
heard
my children ask.
Their
pup was struck by an auto
And
they watched him breathe his last.
Will
there be dogs in heaven?
Just
ask old Saint Bernard.
Without
his friend in that mountain pass
The
going would be hard.
Will
there be dogs in heaven?
Saint
Francis thought there should.
That
wolf he fed at Gubbio
Was
just misunderstood.
Will
there be dogs in heaven?
Just
ask that thin blue line.
They
won't go into danger
Without
their partners from K-9.
Will
there be dogs in heaven?
How
many gave their all
Trying
to save their masters' lives
And
answered duty's call.
Your
pup will run out to greet you
When
you're at the Pearly Gates.
So
make
sure you get to heaven
For
it's there your doggie waits.

THE LIFE OF A POLICE DOG
You brought me home,
one
sunny day
With you for year I would surely stay
I met your pack the
children
and wife
I loved my new home and loved my new life
I slept on your couch
at the
foot of your bed
You looked at me lovingly while petting my head
For months we did train
and
our bonding grew
We're both partners and buddies in blue
We did school demos and
never
did wrong
Over the years my love did grow strong
How I loved to work and
stand
up and bark
In the back of our car from light until dark
We went call to call
having
fun all the way
Until the call came on that one fateful day
A man with a gun the
dispatcher did say
I jumped from my car when it pointed your way
Before leaving home I
was
told by your wife
I knew at that moment I'd give you my life
The bullet struck hard
steady
and true
The bullet struck me instead not strike you
When you go home tell your wife I
did good
Strong, tall and proud on the ground that I stood
I'm dead and gone now
this
much is so true
But I've done my job well in protecting you

A
Precious puppy
who
grew up to be a Working K-9

I'M STILL HERE
I
stood
by your bed last night, I came to have a peep,
I
could
see that you were crying.
You
found it hard to sleep.
I
whined
to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
It's
me, I haven't left you. I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here.
I
was
close to you at breakfast,
I
watched
you pour the tea,
You
were thinking of the many times,
your
hands reached down to me.
I
was
with you at the shops today,
Your
arms were getting sore.
I
longed
to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I
was
with you at my grave today,
you
tend it with such care.
I
want
to reassure you, that I'm not lying there.
I
walked
with you towards the house,
as
you
fumbled for your key.
I
gently
put my paw on you, I smiled and said It's me.
You
looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I
tried
so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's
possible for me to be so near you everyday
To
say
to you with certainty, I never went away.
You
sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew....
In
the
stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The
day is over...I smile and watch you yawning
and
say Goodnight, God bless, I'll see you in the morning.
And
when the time is right for you
to
cross
the brief divide,
I'll
rush across to greet you and we'll stand side by side
I
have
so many things to show you,
there
is so much for you to see.
Be
patient,
live your journey out ...
then
come home to be with me.

THE FIRST

LAST POLICE CANINE
The

The

The

The
first to detect the hidden intruder.
The
first to take action against violence.
The
first to sense his mater's joy.
The

The

The

There
is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called "The Rainbow
Bridge"
because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge, there
is a land of meadows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass. When a
beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and
water and warm Spring weather. Those old and frail animals are young
again.
Those who have been maimed are made whole again. They play all day with
each other. But there is only one thing missing. They are not with
their
special person who loved them on earth. So, each day, they run and play
until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up. The
nose
twitches, the ears are up, the eyes are staring, and this one runs from
the group. You have been seen. When you and your special friend meet,
you
take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and
again. You look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet. Then, you
cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated. (unknown

LAST NIGHT IN
THE
TWILIGHT
Last
night in the twilight as I lay in my bed,
I
heard
my dogs praying and this is what they said.
It
seems
that these humans who love us so deep,
Cannot
cross emotion, it runs far too deep.
If
this
is the last night I lay near this head,
Then
please let them know somehow what I've said.
Right
in their world is elusive and shy
The
deeper the cause, the harder they try.
The
first step is always in love and with care.
But
soon it is pride that carries them there.
I
am
no victim, and they need no decree.
It's
pride and its foolishness that will destroy me.
The
human heart struggles at what it knows not.
And
gains of the spirit can never be bought.
I
pray
in this twilight my human will see,
It's
far more than flesh that bonds him to me.
I
fear
not the darkness, or unknown ahead.
It's
leaving him here, that I fear instead.
For
without me beside him, to look in these eyes,
There
will be no more twilight, nor fairness of skies.
Please
make his pen worthy to write of our trust,
Steady
his sword and forward its thrust.
For
gently this night passes us by,
And
we once inseparable will soon say Good Bye.

A HORSE'S
PRAYER

When
the days work is done, shelter me,
Give
me a clean bed
&
leave me not too small a place in the stable.
Give
me food and drink, and care for me.
Talk
to me for your voice often takes the place of reins,
Be
good
to me and
I
will
serve you yet more gladly and love you,
Don't
tear at the reins,
Don't
reach for your whip when we come to a hill,
Don't
beat me or hit me if I misunderstand you,
But
give me time to understand.
Don't
think me disobedient if I fail to do you will,
Perhaps
there is something a
miss
with my harness or my hooves.
Check
my teeth when I don't eat,
perhaps
I have a bad tooth, you know that hurts.
Don't
tether me too tight and don't crop my tail,
My
only
weapon against mosquitoes and flies,
and
when the day comes, dear master,
when
I'm no longer any use to you.
Don't
let me starve or freeze, nor sell me.
Don't
give me to a stranger
or
a
master who racks me slowly to death and
lets
me starve,
but
be kind hearted and prepare for me
a
fast
and merciful death.
God
will reward you for it,
now
and in eternity let me ask that of you
and
don't think of me lacking in respect
If
I
do it in the name of him who was born in the stable.
Amen

GUARDIANS
OF THE
NIGHT
Trust
in me my friend, for I am your comrade.
I

when
all others have left you.
The
loneliness of night closes in,
I
will

Together
we will conquer
all
obstacles and search out
those
who might harm others.
All
I ask of you is compassion
and
the caring touch of your hands.
It

for you that I will unselfishly give my life.
Although
our days together may be
marked
by the passing of seasons,
I

My

I

at every opening of the door.
You

The

Together

only
others like us will understand.
Outsiders
see us with envy.
I

When

THE
CREATION
OF MAN'S BEST FRIEND
God
summoned a beast from the field, and He said,
"Behold
man is crated in My image. Therefore, adore him. You shall protect him
in the wilderness, shepherd his flocks, watch over his children,
accompany
him wherever he may go, even into civilization. You shall be his
companion,
his ally, and his slave. To do these things, I endow you with the
instincts
uncommon to other beasts: Faithfulness, Devotion, and Understanding,
surpassing
those of man himself. Lest it impair your courage, you shall never
foresee
your death. Lest it impair your loyalty, you shall be blind to the
faults
of man. Lest it impair your understanding, you are denied the power of
words. Speak to your master only through your mind and your honest eyes.
Walk
by his side; sleep in his doorway; ward off his enemies; carry his
burden;
share his affliction; love and comfort him. And in return for this, man
will fulfill your needs and wants, which shall be only food, shelter
and
affection.
So
be
a friend of man. Guide him through the perils along the way to this
land
I have promised him. This shall be your destiny and your immortality."
The dog heard and was content.

GRIEVE NOT
FOR
ME
Grieve
not for me for it has been ordained,
that
my journey here be short.
Grieve
not for me for my loyal presence
will
ever remain in your heart.
I
was
sent to be a Guardian,
for
the Guardians of Law in Blue.
A
fearless,
noble protector,
with
a bond that few con construe.
With
character unshakable,
and
senses that are well heightened,
I
was
sent to be a defender,
so
that
your burden here would be lightened.
Grieve
not for me for in heavenly blue,
our
reunion day will come.
Grieve
not for me for as partners again,
We
will
defend a greater Kingdom.

Losing A
Good Friend
By
Bruce Bertram
Work
seemed long today
The
joy just wasn’t there, but it's over now
Home
at last, in through the front door
A
strange quiet, uneasy I begin to feel
What
is it, as I slip into the shell of my home
My
eyes catch the object of my fear
An
empty bed in the corner, with a bone near
She’s
gone; I’ve lost my best friend

HE IS
JUST
MY DOG
He
is
my other eyes that see above the clouds,
My
ears
that hear above the winds.
He
is
the part of me that can reach out into the sea.
He
has
told me that am his reason for being.
By
the
way, he rests against my leg.
By
the
way, he thumps his tail at my smallest smile.
By
the
way he shows his hurt
when
I leave without taking him.
I
think
it makes him sick with worry
when
he is not with me.
When
I am angry, he clowns to make me smile.
When
I am happy, he is joy unbounded.
When
I am a fool, he ignores it.
When
I succeed, he even brags.
Without
him, I am only another man.
With
him, I am all powerful.
He
has
taught me the meaning of devotion.
He
is
loyalty itself.
With
him, I know a secret comfort and peace.
He

I

always need him as much as he needs me.

AM
I WORTHY?
I
met him as a young man, I was far beyond my years.
I
met him with his mom and dad, his life was just beginning
His
ruffled hair and dark mischievous eyes told me his story
and
my love for him bloomed when he kept licking my face.
I
thought, can this trusting puppy be what I want? Then I thought,
AM
I WORTHY?
I
kept thinking of the token words "Protect & serve."
I
looked at this tiny forlorn fluff of hair, could he do that?
My
doubts and fears would quickly disappear.
His
strength and intelligence amazed me.
How
could this small animal out do a worldly man like myself
I
had a lot to learn.
AM
I WORTHY?
I
thought training him cannot be this easy,
he
showed me how easy it was
Couldn't
I just realize that he knows exactly what I want.
He
made me proud,
and
I wondered as we worked together
what
HE thought of ME?
AM
I WORTHY?
So
many jobs we have done together.
the
bad guys we have captured,
and
the good guys we have found
The
praises we have sought, and the ridicule we have met
AM
I WORTHY?
Time
goes by so quickly, we are both a little older now
and
not so lively in our step.
It's
a little frightening how rapidly our lives pass by
A
boy - A puppy - A
man - A dog.
I
start to think about retirement. Does he think about his death?
AM
I WORTHY?
We've
had such a short time together,
his
lifetime is a shining star in mine
I
try to show him all I know, he ends up teaching me.
AM
I WORTHY?
It's
time. I tell him he's older now and must stay home.
I
have called in sick - he never has.
AM
I WORTHY?
While
I am gone, he guards the house.
He
never feels the pain.
He
meets me at the door as if to say,
"I'm
glad you made it on your own."
AM
I WORTHY?
The
vet tells me there's no hope,
I
cry and pray that he is wrong.
My
wife tells me he died in his sleep.
I
know he never slept on duty.
AM
I WORTHY?
I
bury him in the backyard, a place he called home.
I
wonder if he thinks it just another place to
"Protect
and Serve" and I wonder...
AM
I WORTHY?
What
can I ever do in my lifetime to deserve
what
I have known?
His
wagging tail, his eyes,
his
love say more than I can ever share.

I WORTHY

In The Line of Duty;

The badge no longer on my chest,
I sleep now in eternal rest.

DEPUTY'S
LAST ROLL CALL
The
deputy stood and faced his god,
Which
must always come to pass.
He
hoped
his boots were shining,
just
as brightly as his badge.
“Step
forward now, deputy.
How
shall I deal with you?”
“Have
you always turned the other cheek,
to
my
church have you been true?”
The
deputy squared his shoulders
and
said, “No Lord, I guess I ain’t,
because
all of those who wear badges
can’t
always be a saint.
I’ve
had to work most Sundays,
and
at times my talk was rough,
and
sometimes I’ve been violent
because
the streets are tough.
But
I never took a penny
that
was not mine to keep,
Though
I worked a lot of overtime
when
the bills just got to steep.
I
never
passed a cry for help,
though
at times I shook with fear.
And
sometimes, God forgive me,
I
wept
unmanly tears
I
know
I don’t deserve a place
amongst
all the people here.
They
never wanted me around,
except
to calm their fear.
But,
if you have a place for me here,
Lord
it needn’t be so grand.
I
never
expected or had to much,
if
you
don’t… I’ll understand.
There
was silence all around the throne,
where
the saints had often trod.
As
the
deputy waited quietly
for
the judgement of his God.
“Step
forward now, deputy
You
have borne your burdens well.
Come
work a shift on Heaven’s streets,
You’ve
done your time in HELL.”

Don't
grieve for me I served you well
I
loved
you more than you could ever tell
I am

you see a badge worn with pride

A
Rescue Poem
The Reason
(to
you from all your rescue dogs)
I
would've died that day if not for you.
I
would've given up on life if not for your kind eyes.
I
would've used my teeth in fear if not for your gentle hands.
I
would have left this life believing that all humans don't care
Believing
there is no such thing as fur that isn't matted;
Skin
that isn't flea bitten, good food and enough of it.
A
warm bed to sleep on, a couch to stretch out on,
A
deep, soft pad just for me by your chair,
Your
loving, quiet voice to gentle the nightmares away.
Someone
to love ME!
To
show me I deserve love just because I exist.
Your
kind eyes, your loving smile, your gentle hands
Your
big heart saved me...
You
saved me from the terror of the pound,
Soothing
away the memories of my old life.
You
have taught me what it means to be loved.
I
have seen you do the same for other dogs like me.
I
have heard you ask yourself in times of despair
"Why
do I do it?"
When
there is no more money, no more room, no more homes…
You
open your heart a little bigger, stretch the money a little tighter
Make
just a little more room...to save one more like me.
I
tell you with the gratitude and love that shines in my eyes
In
the best way I know how…
Reminding
you why you go on trying.
I
am the reason
The
dogs before me were the reason
As
are the ones who will come after.
Our
lives would've been wasted, our love never given;
We
would die if not for you.
