Park honor for
hero P.A. dog
Sirius' ashes will
stay in monument at Collins
By
Hilda Munoz - Jersey Journal staff writer
Thursday,
September 26, 2002
Sirius,
the Port Authority pooch who died at the World Trade Center September 11,
2001 will live on in the memory of those who knew him and those who visit
Bayonne's local dog park. The dog park at Dennis P. Collins Park, at First
Street in Downtown Bayonne, may be re-named for the canine. The Port Authority
of New York and New Jersey even plans to give the city an urn with Sirius'
ashes, which will be placed permanently inside a monument at the dog park
entrance. Plans for the renaming came about during discussion for the Third
Annual Bayonne Bridge 5K Benefit Run, scheduled for
October
6, 2002-8 AM to 9 PM. "In discussing the race
with the Port Authority and the Hudson County Animal League it occurred
to me that we had the dog park in the shadows of the Bayonne Bridge," said
Councilman At-Large Anthony Chiappone. "I thought it would be a nice gesture
to honor the dog by naming the park after the dog." Chiappone is a co-sponsor
of the race, along with the First Ward Civic Association, the South Hudson
Spiked Shoe Club and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The
race was initiated in 1998 by Chiappone, then First Ward councilman.
