"Crime prevention
is something
you can really get
your teeth into."
I would
like to thank everyone who help me with my
loss
of K-9 Midnite who was put down 8/6/02 due to illness. Midnite was a black
lab & Ridgeback mix of 13 years old. Midnite was special to me and
my family. He was my first K-9 and took all the mistakes I made in stride.
He started as a family pet and my daughter took a while getting over that
I made him a working dog, but became proud of his duties as a K-9. He was
able to again become a family pet in 1994 when I started my second
dog, Knitro. Midnite enjoyed a retirement and eating M&M's that he
got hooked on while working with me. I want to give Paul Thompson a big
heart felt thanks for being with my family and me when Midnite got his
last ride in the patrol car on 8/6/02. Midnite, you will be missed and
you are special. Keep Jake, Bill, Basco, Arco, Kai, and Kemo and all the
other K-9's company up there.

ASKO
August 17,
2002
Officer
Ken Greenleaf
Redondo
Beach Police Dept. CA
401
Diamond Street Redondo - Beach, California 90277
310-379-2477
Wherever
crime was festering,
There's
one who stopped it fast.
He
won most competitions
and
he never came in last!
He's
quick, he's sure, he's Asko
The
police dog, canine champ.
And
once he has his jaws shut
they
hold tighter than a clamp!
He's
has a sense of humor
But
at work he wastes no time.
No
messing 'round for Asko
When
he has his mind on crime.
For
every situation
There's
an action he must do.
When
tracking things or people
He
can sniff out any clue.
The
furry coat of Asko
Is
brown and black and gold.
His
eyes are bright and accurate,
His
talents manifold.
He
will always be remembered
For
he was one of the Best!
It
was a sad day in Redondo.
Asko
was laid to Rest!
|
It
is with great sadness that I announce the
passing
of K-9 Asko. During Asko's career he has had two spinal surgeries causing
him, of course, to slow down.
Asko
was given six months to live after his last surgery which would have been
May of 2000. Two years later,
Asko
was still with us. During the past two weeks Asko has been losing
all his motor skills and was dragging himself throughout the house and
yard. He was getting to the point where he could not hold his bladder or
bowel movements. The decision was made to put him down. My decision
was
supported
by my trainer and veterinarian. At 7:30AM this morning, K-9 Asko was put
to sleep. He passed away with his head in my lap and a kong ball in his
mouth.
He will
be missed.
Asko
was hired on October 11, 1993 and retired
a full
seven years later on October 11, 2000.
He
was the first Redondo Police K-9 to be cross trained
for
patrol and narcotics. He has won competition in both patrol and narcotics.
He apprehended suspects from simple assault, burglary to murder. He was
truly a remarkable dog. Asko was my second K-9 and a great dog.
I now
have Basko as my K-9 partner.
Ken
Greenleaf
The
Redondo Beach Police Department established their Canine Team in the late
1970’s with the purchase of two German Shephards....”Kaiser” and
“Oscar”. These dogs were followed by “Bishop”, “Donar”, "Asko" ,“Alex”,
“Boris”, “Mike”, “Boomer”, “Bear”, “Andrej”, and “Arko”. Today the city
is protected by Canine “Basko”, “Bullet”, and “Ijax. ”

HUNTER
August 20, 2002
Partner:SGT.
LARRY SCHROEDER
MONTGOMERY
COUNTY SHERIFF DEPT. OH
330
W. Second St. ~ P.O. Box 972 ~ Dayton, Ohio 45422
~ PH:
(937) 225-4357 ~ 937.225.6442 - direct line to office.

Hunter
was a great K-9 and partner. He
recovered
over 4.5 milliom in cash and another 10 million in drugs. I would
have to say he did his part in the war against drugs. I have his
son Magnum 2 1/2 Labrador, he his so much like his father and a great bird
dog and drug dog. I am looking for a yellow female pup now to carry
on the Hunter line. And yes there will be a Hunter Jr. My dad used to call
HUNTER his grandson. My parents kept him while we were in Mississippi for
Christmas. My dad spoiled him. I was in a cruiser crash and was unable
to get a hold of Cindy to come and get him before they took me to the hospital,
so I call my dad to come and get Hunter. When he got there the other officers
tried to get Hunter out of the car and he about ate them alive. My dad
walked up to the open the cage door and got him out with no problem. They
were 'big buds' till the end.

Sgt.
Larry Schroeder of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department, here in
Dayton, Ohio lost his retired black lab this past Saturday. His dog HUNTER,
a black lab of fourteen years passed away of natural causes. Hunter served
the department for over eight years. He worked with Deputy Shirley Doran
from 1991 to 1994, Deputy Officer Randy Duff from 1994 - 1995 and Deputy
Larry Schroder from 1995 - 1999. Larry ended up working with K-9 Jake,
another black lab on the Drug Task Force from 1999 to April 2001, until
being promoted to Sgt. in the Montgomery Sheriff's Dept. He had patrol
dogs from 1967 through 1994 and drug dogs from 1991 to present. At the
time between 1991 - 1994, they had three labs in service. After 1994, only
one drug dog. The department has three partrol/narc canines since September
2001 and have made many drug finds and apprehensions since they hit the
street in December. K-9 Jake is working with his new handler on the
drug task force.
