Sammy was a 3 1/2 year old German Shepherd, imported from Germany and certified in Narcotics and Utility Patrol Work.  Sammy was responsible and assisted in many drug and search arrests; as well as many public community policing engagements.  Sammy's life was suddenly ended when he was accidentally struck by a moving vehicle along a State Highway, while on-duty Christmas Eve night.  The Charlestown Police Department is proud of Sammy's accomplishments and loyalty to law enforcement, and dedicate this page to his memory.  Thanks Sammy.

K-9 HAHNS
1994 - 2001

Hahns was donated to Major Ed McDonald at 10 weeks of age to become a member of the K-9 team.  Early on, he exhibited a strong drive and ability to learn quickly.  He was fully certified in narcotics and street patrol by the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA) at the young age of one year.  Over the years, Hahns was responsible for numerous arrests and was well known among area police departments, who often called upon him for assistance.  After Hahns was diagnosed with hip dipplasia and could no longer perform street patrol, he was still used for narcotics and article searches.  He once found a gun used in a burglary the previous day, buried 6 inches underground, by tracking the scent from a gun clip found 30 yards away down a steep hill.  In September 2001, Hahns became ill.  His local veterinarian referred him to Purdue University Veterinary Hospital where he underwent surgery and was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease.  His illness did not respond to treatments and he died on December 28, 2001, at 7 1/2 years of age.  He will be remembered as loyal, dedicated, protective of his master, and sadly missed by his family. The Charlestown Police Department is proud of Hahns' accomplishments and loyalty to law enforcement, and dedicate this page to his memory.  Thanks Hahns.
I as well as the other K9 Officers appreciate anyone that takes the time to show respect and appreciation to our unsung hero partners. I have been in K9 since the I have been on the force and would not know what to do without them. They are a silent partner that will never run from danger, give their lives for you and protect you at all costs. They are a valuable tool to police and community, unfortunatly aa lot of people do not undertand their full potential and time it take to have a succesful K9 program. Thank you for your interest.

Beloved canine deputy dies
By Susan Spencer-Wendel, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

WEST PALM BEACH -- Deputy Robby, the lovable-looking, bomb-sniffing canine caretaker of the courthouse, died Tuesday. He was almost 7 years old, five years of that spent working downtown in county buildings.  Robby's survived by no known progeny, but a courthouse staff and a handler, Deputy Charlie Robinson, who dearly loved him.
"Next time, we won't get so emotionally attached," said chief court administrator Susan Ferrante Thursday.
Ferrante said Robby was one-of-a-kind -- the first bomb-sniffing dog assigned full-time to a courthouse in Florida, perhaps even the nation. He spent four hours a day patrolling the building, the perimeter and county buildings, then sat in the mail room running his nose over all incoming items.  Robby is a Belgian Malinois, one of the American Kennel Club's smallest breeds of shepherd. The breed was developed for sheep-herding and is known as a confident dog with a strong desire to work.  Robby was actually deputized and wore a badge around his neck.  And he was great with the school groups.  "Kids loved Robby. He really knew how to turn work off and on," Ferrante said.  The other bomb-sniffing dog currently assigned to the courthouse isn't as affable, she said.  Over the years, Robby worked only about eight bomb threats, but provided an extra sense of security in the new age of terrorism.  By Thursday, staff members responded in kind, collecting $400 for a donation to a local animal shelter.  A memorial service organized by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office will be held at a later date.
