My
name is Shane Houston. I am a Security Enforcement Officer in Victoria,
Australia. I recently lost my
Protective
Service K-9, Montanna . He was a Belgian Shepherd of the Terveuren
variety,
long hair, black and tan.
He
died from an aggressive stomach cancer. The loss of him hit me so hard
because he was only 6 years old.
This
was totally unexpected and very aggressive. He was
gone
within a week of diagnosis.
I
would be most grateful and pleased
if
you would add him to your tribute programme.
I
have added a photo of him and a poem I wrote for him.
He
Loved to work and he was a natural protector
and
partner with a natural dislike for offenders.
PROTECTOR
OF THE NIGHT
In
the
dark of night we stand united as one,
Walking
with the wind protecting the streets,
You
stand at my side without fear of foe,
You
remain ever loyal no matter the ask,
You
look not for yourself when you get the call,
Prepared
to give all whatever the task,
Whether
the job's search and rescue,
Or
tracking
offenders,
You
do the job proud and we will always remember.
You
are my partner
A
Law
Enforcement K-9 - & - A Protector of the Night.

The
Marin Humane Society's K9 Care Fund offsets expenses incurred by police
and search and rescue dogs. Through the K9 Care Fund, public service
dogs
are eligible for free veterinary care, grooming, safety equipment and
boarding
at the Marin Humane Society shelter. Police and SAR dogs put their
lives
on the line very day. High vet care and kenneling costs can sometimes
place
a burden on police and fire department budgets and the K9 Care Fund is
designed to ease the burden. For more information, please call

Sky
was also recently retired due to his handler being promoted. We all
figured
that he would live out the "good life" as he is only eight years old
and
a very strong, healthy dog. However, he had a very freak medical
problem
occurred over the weekend, an embolism to his spinal cord. This is not
something we can "fix." He is now paralyzed in his rear. After
much
discussion, we have concluded the "best thing" to do is euthanize him.
He is not happy, in fact he is frantic, not being able to get around
and
we cannot allow him to suffer further. So needless to say, this is a
very
unhappy day for all of us who love this beautiful dog. His death has
grieved
the department and everyone who knew him. A beautiful German Shepherd
who
was born in the Netherlands. He was physically powerful and tenacious.
He could grab hold of the decoy and it was like dealing with a rag
doll.
For all of his strength, he wasn't wild. He was in control of himself
and
would listen to Officer Hill. The children in school loved him. Officer
Hill and Sky received a number of commendations over the years. When
Sky
was home with Rich & Kathy and teens, Catherine and Andrew, he was
the perfect family dog. The other family dog, a Lab mix named Sophie is
lost these days. It was amazing the impact this dog had on people's
lives.

We
lost another police service dog the other night. It happened
suddenly
while the handler and dog were at work. The dog collapsed and
stopped
breathing. We are not sure why yet. The dog had not had any
previous medical history of concern. The handler, Senior Officer
Mac Marin, started CPR and I drove him to the veterinary
hospital.
We arrived quickly, but the doctors were not able to bring him
back.
Niko was only a 7 years old German Shepard. He was the most
experienced
dog we had. NIKO is a German Shepard selected for our department and
imported
to this country from Germany. NIKO was currently trained for patrol
services
and in narcotics detection He will be sorely missed.
