In Loving Memory of
K-9 MASON
January 24, 2005

K9  Recovery
 Columbus, OHIO

It is with extreme sadness that I announce the passing of K-9 Mason,
Columbus Ohio. K9 Mason had the heart of a lion and the antics of a
child. I shared but a short time with this amazing dog but, he left
a permanent trail of Pawprints on my heart.  Jan. 24,2005 is a day I will never forget. This is the day he crossed over the Rainbow bridge, to forever be free and happy. To play his heart out with all the balls he could gather. And attack with earnest any body of water present.
K9 Mason was a one in a million dog. His drive and love of his work
never ceased to amaze me. His contribution to the Law Enforcement
and SAR K9 community, I believe will never be forgotten.
K9 Mason was trained as a Cadaver Dog or, as some may refer to them
as a Human Remains Detection Dog (HRDD). His ability to root out even
the faintest of scents was uncanny. K9 Mason was truly born and

gifted for this work. And proved himself over each time he worked.
Or as I believe, to him it was only a game.  His most common job was to locate bodies of drowned victims however, his toughest case was a 30 year old murder case. But all jobs he was asked to tackle, he always seemed to do them with ease and with the grace of fluid motion. The harder the problem, the more determined he become to solve the problem for his ever loved reward - His BALL!

I received Mason as a "donation" out of Michigan June 22,2002.
Delivered to me by Larry Barker. 7 weeks later, K9 Mason and K9

Kayla traveled to Michigan to attend a L.E.T.S. K9 Seminar. My
intention with Mason at the time was to expose him to training for
cadaver and problem solving. I never imagined him to pass a
certification Land/Water Cadaver test for NNDDA (National Narcotic
Detection Dog Association) with only 40 plus hours of exposure and
training, during this time. For it normally takes many, many months
or even years to ready a K9 for such a certification. This
accomplishment alone, proved his remarkable ability to undertake
this type of job. I am not sure who was more suprised at his
Certification trial, Myself or Instructor Mikey Brown (from Texas).

Today, along with longtime friend/K9 Handler Jodie Clemons. We went
to Schoedinger Funeral Home to receive K9 Mason. Upon arrival, Mike
Schoedinger (head big wig) presented K9 Mason within his beautiful
Urn and a "Proclamation" signed by  Gov. Taft, for K9 Mason's
service to the Community, State and beyond. Apparently, Schoedinger
staff felt a need to give some sort of recognition to the K9 SAR
community and contacted the State House. I held myself together,

until I was presented with his paperwork, Clippings of his hair and
a embossed card of his Paw print.
"Go rest high on the mountain
for son, your work on earth is done..."
My dear son Mason, you will always be held dear to me.

"After dog understood…then GOD turned to man and said,
 "Behold, this is your partner.
You shall worship him as he worships you.
It is your duty to
be kind to this gentle beast
and know that in his mute way, he loves you.

Your purpose is to care for him,
through youth and age, until he can serve no more.
Understand that your final act of love will take courage.
Spare
your partner any pain.
Save his dignity. Know that he will never lie to you,
he will always understand you
and that his love will be blind.
You are commanded to use him in service to mankind.
I have placed him here as a guardian angel for you,
to watch over you and care for you.
He is from heaven, therefore divine.
Let his character speak to your heart and be
the example for you to follow.
He shall fulfill your inequities.
He shall be everything humanity strives to be: Honest,
Loyal, Kind in Heart, and
Strong in Spirit.

Therefore, you shall call him PARTNER and best friend."

 Your soulful Partner,

Amyjo Beley

I was not even looking for a dog at the time I got him. He picked me. I was at a Shep kennel looking for a shep pup, for a client (I worked on the side training dogs). Dakota was in a pen with 3 other pups. Dakota was 4 months at the time and had just arrived into state. Anyway, Each time I came out of a whelping "house" (4 in all) there he would sit for me. He did not go up to the Kennel-master or my friend , only me, each time. Helga (yes,Helga from Germany) would put Dak back into the puppy pen each time. At the last whelping house I watched out the window, and Dakota was ignoring the other pups, not playing with them. He scaled a 6 ft chain link fence, nose dived off the top and ran up the the last whelping house. I came out and he just BEAMED with pride and looked me straight in the eye. As if to say, "Look Lady, I am yours and your mine. Lets go home!" Even as a Pup, he had the most soulful eyes I have ever seen in a dog. "Old Eyes. "Needless to say, I had to drive to the bank and make a hefty withdraw! In a few hours, pink papers in hand I placed Dakota up front with me in the truck. A few miles down the road he promptly threw up in my lap. LOL <>That's how I got my old man. Yesterday, as we sat in front of the fireplace awaiting the end. I held his head and looked into his eyes. "Hey old Man, I love you and will always love you. I want to thank you for being with me. Your such a good man!" I said these words over and over. And in my mind was recalling the Day, Dakota picked me at the kennel in Lancaster, PA. 12 1/2 yrs ago. Dakota and I danced our last Dance together..............

  <>Examples of K-9 Dakota's work:
On the night of June 28,1998 I received a call about a missing 5 year old in the next county away. For the last 12+ hours we had been hit by severe Thunder storms and sneaky pop-up Tornados. Flooding was taking away parts of small towns, blocking roads and endangering lives. The fear was this missing girl may have become a victim of nature. At approximately 2300 hrs I arrived on scene; Baker St., New Philadelphia. Briefing had informed me of the needed information of our missing child; a one 5 year old Devan Duniver. Dakota was started on her trail, giving us an idea of stopping points and possible visitations to the neighborhood, as well as, confirming her presence at certain sites. Unfortunately, Devan was located, in a cluster of trees, shrubs and vines @ approximately 0740. Deceased. This case went to trail and received National attention, on the basis of "Kids killing Kids" featured on 20/20 and other newscasts. Suspect 12 years old Anthony Harris was charged and convicted with the stabbing of Devan. WHo would of though that the dog, that picked me, would have been an intrigal part in a nationally covered case.

Big-hearted search dog remembered Firefighters honor Harry
By Conning Chu , Correspondent

MONTEBELLO -- The Montebello Fire Department held a memorial service Saturday for search dog Harry, one of the canines who helped locate victims of the La Conchita mudslide.    Harry, a four-year-old chocolate Labrador, died of heart failure in the transportation crate after finishing his work at the seaside disaster. He was part of one of 72 certified search-and-rescue dog teams in the nation and helped to find victims in the 2003 Old Waterman Canyon mudslide and Commerce train derailment incidents.  "I was always encouraged by the effort he put out,' said firefighter Russell Tao dog handler and Harry's partner. "He was a dog of a lot of drive and (he was) very committed.'
The firefighters honored Harry at the memorial service Saturday with a opening and closing prayers, "Amazing Grace' played on bagpipes and a recall whistle blown nationwide by all departments with dog teams. The department will also place a plaque in its building in memory of Harry and his service to the department.

FEMA Certified Type I, December 2003
************************
Born in September 2000, Harry was originally intended to work for Guide Dogs of America.  Fortunately for me, he wasn’t suited for guide work and was donated to the NDSDF.  Harry and I became partners in October 2001.  We worked and played hard together and certified to FEMA Type I in December 2003.  Together we searched the Commerce, CA train derailment in June of 2003, the Old Waterman Canyon Mudslide in December of 2003 and the La Conchita Landslide in January 2005.  Sadly, Harry died suddenly on January 19, 2005, just six days after working at La Conchita.  He was a great friend and partner.
Harry was the youngest canine in the department to become a search-and- rescue dog, Tao said. He said Harry started at six months old, while most dogs don't start until they are nine months old.
While Harry was originally bred to be a guide dog, Debra
Tosch, director of the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, said. However, he was so energetic that he seemed much more suited to be a search dog.
"They thought at nine weeks he was too much for them to handle,' Capt. Marc Valentine of the Montebello Fire Department said at the memorial service.
As a puppy, Harry who Valentine called "our little hairball psycho' for his energy was given to NDSF founders John and Wilma Melville before being trained as a search dog and teamed up with Tao.
"Out came this ball of hair who fit in the palms of your hands,' Valentine said in the service.

Russell Tao said the "big, bombastic, very excitable' Harry was a friend to him and a critical element in the search-and-rescue teams.
The dog teams have participated in many disaster rescue efforts across the nation. In the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the
dog teams played a major role in rescuing and recovering victims at the World Trade Center in New York.
"God almighty must have had a fun day the day he invented the Labrador, golden retriever, and any other dog because they are truly entertaining,' Montebello Fire Chief Jim Cox said. "There has got to be a touch of God on their backs.'

FIREMAN’S PRAYER
When I am called to duty, God, when-
ever flames may rage, give me strength
to save some life, whatever be its age.
Help me embrace a little child before it is
too late, or save an older person from
the horror of that fate. Enable me to be
alert and hear the weakest shout, and
quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling, and to give the
best in me, to guard my every neighbor
and protect his property. And if,
according to my fate, I am to lose my
life, please bless with your protecting
hand my family, friends and wife.
