Two Police Dogs Die, One Injured
By Derek Sheppard, DSHEPPARD@KITSAPSUN.COM
August 26, 2005

Wednesday was a tough day for the county's police canines.
Two retired police dogs died Wednesday and one active dog suffered an injury at the Kitsap County Fair during a public demonstration. The Bremerton Police Department's recently retired drug sniffing dog, Rosco, a black lab, died Wednesday after a bout with a degenerative blood disease. "Rosco was a family member, a friend and a partner in the fight against crime," wrote Rosco's handler, Detective Bill Endicott.
In Rosco's five-year career, cut short by the illness, he was credited with taking more than $300,000 of drugs and more than 120 criminals off the streets.

The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office canine, Andor, a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois, died Wednesday as well after suffering from cancer.
Andor, the office's senior dog, worked with handler Sgt. Jon Hytinen for more than nine years, and was credited with helping arrest more than 200 suspects. He had been in semi retirement, working only when needed until his illness was diagnosed.

On Wednesday, during an exhibition at the county fair, the Sheriff's Office canine Ryker suffered a minor paw injury and was taken to an animal hospital. Sheriff's spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson said several citizens had inquired Thursday if the German Shepherd was OK, and he said he is expected to recover from injury in 10 to 14 days.
John has been in K9 since September of 1993, Andor began as John's K9 partner in October of 1996.  The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit was established in 1980. The mission of the K-9 Unit is to locate suspects and/or evidence at or near crime scenes and to provide protection and/or backup of the line officers when possible and practical. We also participate in public education and demonstrations. Call or come see us at the Kitsap County Fair. The Unit consists of two tracking/protection dogs and one narcotics detection dog. A call out schedule provides for 24 hour a day response capabilities. The K-9 handlers and their partners undergo an exhaustive training regimen upon entrance to the program, and continue to train on a weekly basis to maintain a high level of proficiency

The county's police canine community has suffered its fair share of loss in recent years. Bremerton Police Officer Mike Davis lost two dogs who were killed in the line of duty. In 2001, Buddy was shot and killed, and last year, KG was drowned. Both dogs were chasing suspects at the time.
In 2003, a Sheriff's Office dog, Canto, was put to sleep following medical complications. He had retired from duty the year before.
Buddy was replaced recently with Lance, a Rottweiler. His handler is Officer Billy Renfro.  Andor was replaced last year by Elco, a German shepherd. His handler is Deputy Alan Langguth.

K-9 Goldon was struck and killed by a vehicle at the end of his shift in Currituck County on August 17, 2005.  He is now resting peacefully at the Rainbow Bridge.  Goldon was nine years old. He was born in Budapest, Hungary, he moved to Elizabeth City when he was just 18 months old.  He is survived by his handler Sergeant Mark Chappell of the Currituck County Sheriff Office and wife Michele and their three sons, Anthony, Jared, and Will, along with two dog sibling, Sasha and Dobey and two cat siblings, Pumpkin and Midnight.  Everyone in the family has been left with a whole in their heart, he will be deeply missed forever.
  1.  Goldon attended and graduated Mid-Atlantic Canine School at the top of his class.    He was trained as a patrol dog, handler protection, narcotics, tracking, article searches and criminal apprehension.  He was a member of the USPCA (United States Police Canine Association) Region 2.  He re-certified annually at the USPCA Region 2 PD1, PD 2 and narcotics canine trials held throughout the states of North and South Carolina.  Goldon has received numerous awards at these canine trials.  He was first employed as an Elizabeth City Police canine from May 1998-May 2001.  He then was employed as a Currituck County Sheriff Deputy from May 2001-present.
Goldon has not only served the communities of Elizabeth City and Currituck but he has also help Camden, Pasquotank, and Perquimans Counties as well as Hertford.  He has been instrumental in many drug apprehension and arrest as well as article seizers and criminal apprehension.  He also did many Canine demonstrations in his career making sure children and adults alike knew and understood his job. He was known to many school children, he has done presentations at JC Sawyer, Sheep-Harney, Central Elementary and River Road Middle Schools in Pasquotank County as well as JP Knapp, Griggs and Central Elementary in Currituck.  He also has done demonstrations for local civic organization such as 4-H and Girl Scoot troops, and church organization.

A memorial to celebrate Goldon’s life will be held August 31, at 1300 hrs. at the Veteran's Memorial Park in Coinjock, NC. All the communities that knew and loved Goldon are invited to attend.
The service was very nice and went well as much as possible.  There were about fifty people at the service.  We were by the Intercoastal Waterway which made it very breezy.  Goldon love to run and play at that park.  The Sheriff said Goldon must be there becuase the wind was so hard it keep knocking the picture collauge down and even the wreath.  It was about 93 degrees today and with the heat index it was over 100.  The breeze was a blessing.  Some handlers brought their K-9 but it was really too hot and they left them in the cars.  We had our minister do the service.  Mark spoke, the Sheriff spoke and Mark's brother spoke on behalf of the detective division.  They are having a flag flown over the US Capital in honor of Goldon then the flag will be presented to Mark.
